ABSTRACT
Western Europe experienced an unprecedented influx of immigrants after 1945. Some came for social or political reasons, but most arrived in response to a massive demand for labour in the expanding economy of the 1950s and 1960s. With economic growth faster than it had ever been before in western Europe, natural increase and the movement of the existing population into employment could not fill all the potential new jobs.
