ABSTRACT
Wilde launched his literary career when he won the Newdigate Prize at Oxford University for his long poem ‘Ravenna’ in 1878 and read it publicly in the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford. He completed the same career 20 years later as the anonymous and outcast author of The Ballad of Reading Gaol. This chapter looks at the poetry with which Wilde’s corpus opens and closes.
