## ABSTRACT

A complex number can be represented pictorially on rectangular or Cartesian axes. The horizontal axis is used to represent the real axis and the vertical axis is used to represent the imaginary axis. Such a diagram is called an Argand diagram. Whenever changing from a Cartesian form of complex number to a polar form, or vice versa, a sketch is invaluable for deciding the quadrant in which the complex number occurs. However, in engineering, the symbol i indicates electric current, and to avoid any possible confusion the next letter in the alphabet, j, is used to represent -1. When an electrical circuit contains inductance only, the ratio of voltage to current is called the inductive reactance. The ratio of VI in any ac electrical circuit containing both resistance and reactance is called the impedance Z of the circuit and is measured in ohms.
