ABSTRACT

Floors The range of finishes available is extensive, as is the quality and cost of installation. Selection of a Suitable material should depend on the building or room function with regard to durability, appearance, effectiveness, comfort and anticipated maintenance. Carpeting is a good example of cost and quality variation. Traditional woven carpets such as Axminsters and Wiltons have the pile woven with the backing and into the backing respectively. A cheaper, popular alternative is tufted carpet, where the pile is stitched into a jute backing and stuck with a latex adhesive. Pile materials vary between the very costly wool fibres which have excellent wearing qualities and the choice of several man-made fibres such as acrylic, nylon, polypropylene and rayon. Many manufacturers have experimented with mixtures of synthetics .and natural fibres to achieve moderately priced, hard wearing carpets.
