ABSTRACT
The 1960s was an era in which people in North America and in westernEurope believed that they controlled their own destiny, and people in central Europe wanted to be the same. That is why the decade felt so distinctive, and why of all the decades surveyed here, it is the one that most clearly had its own style and remains – to many of its ageing participants – the most attractive.
