ABSTRACT

W. W. E. Slights has written a book-length study of Jonson and secrecy, Ben Jonson and the Art of Secrecy (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1994). Robert C. Evans has interestingly revived the very early suggestion that Volpone was based on the founder of Charterhouse in 'Thomas Sutton: Ben Jonson's Volpone?', Philological Quarterly, 68 (1989), pp. 295-313. On the play in performance (it has been the most performed of all the plays over the years), see the

items by Cave, Hinchcliffe, Jensen and Jones in Performance Studies in the Further Reading.
