ABSTRACT
Many hundreds of states and communities of earlier times lost their independence to the various European colonial powers. Most lost it completely. A few, as in Northern Nigeria, managed to keep some local power to govern themselves. But their power was small, and always under colonial control even when this was called ‘indirect’.
