Linguistics in the ancient Near East

In ancient Egypt, it is mostly from the Ptolemaic period, after the conquest of Egypt by Alexander the Great, that a preoccupation with the structure and the diverse grammatical constructions of the language is attested. The need for communicating and interacting with the Greeks no doubt furthered an interest that is attested, albeit sporadically, before contacts with the Greeks.
