ABSTRACT
In addition to features of the natural landscape, man-made structures are also frequently referred to in field-names. Many allusions are to agricultural buildings but there are also references to buildings not directly connected with agriculture, to roads, and to street furniture and minor structures. Ruins and surface indications of archaeological sites also receive attention in a wide variety of field-names. Even before towers and spires became usual, churches would have been larger than other buildings nearby, and apart from what would have been seen as their centrality in the life of the community, this physical conspicuousness was a good reason for their mention in field-names.
