ABSTRACT
Rather than describing 'causes' and ·'origins' it is much more helpful to use the image of tributaries converging together as one river (1l3, ch. 3). In this way we can paint a picture of the conditions which prevailed within the late medieval Church on the eve of the Reformation without apportioning blame or suggesting either that the Reformation was bound to occur or that it had to take the forms it did.
