ABSTRACT

Teachers should try to identify criteria such as those mentioned above to guide their selection of content. Simultaneously, a programme of study must be planned for the whole key stage bearing in mind what comes before and after. Consideration needs to be given to the balance of time and coverage devoted to core units as against supplementary or school designed units. Historians have always complained of content overloads in syllabuses and National Curriculum orders are no different. The whole of year 7 could be devoted to the medieval world but cannot be. There could be and possibly will be a wide range of views as to what features of the medieval world are most deserving of study but again teachers will have to make judgements about which elements are more significant and which could be given a 'broad brush' treatment. This means that the organisation of the units will have to be established in order to gauge the available time.
