ABSTRACT
All these various types of information (see Benjamin 1989), hard, soft and bibliographical, have been progressively transformed into computerized databases. Some of these are very small and hardly merit the description of information systems. The requirements of a 4system9 are the subject of section 8.2. A normal requirement would be that the data are networked on-line to a variety of remote terminal locations, or else that the host can provide a rapid postal response to enquiries. These criteria are met by the National On-line Manpower Information System (NOMIS), provided by the University of Durham for the Employment Department Group in the UK. This has increasingly expanded its data domains from that department’s statistics to embrace related fields including data on population and migration. It is the subject of the case study with which this chapter is concluded. It has counterparts in the Netherlands and Denmark, and is intending to expand to include European (EC) labour market data. It has, however, no data on named employers or in the form of text, for reasons of confidentiality which are beyond the remit of this chapter.
