ABSTRACT

In this chapter we continue our discussion begun in Chapter 7 of included propositions and their grammatical counterparts, embedded clauses. In the previous chapter we considered propositions functioning within other propositions as a participant or as the specifier of a participant. We are now going to consider propositions which function within other propositions as circumstances. In grammatical terms, the previous chapter dealt with nominal clauses — those functioning in noun-like positions as Subject, Object, Complement, appositive, prepositional complement — and with adjectival clauses — those functioning in adjective-like positions as noun modifier, Object Complement. This chapter deals with adverbial clauses — with adverb-like functions as Adjunct or Disjunct.
