ABSTRACT

Although the transport problems of the world’s cities usually form a major focus of attention for urban planners, the populations living in rural areas of the advanced and less developed nations also face severe difficulties in meeting their needs for movement. This chapter looks at these problems by considering rural transport deprivation at various levels of economic and social development and assessing the effectiveness of the policies and plans that have been proposed to improve levels of mobility and accessibility for people in more remote and isolated communities.
