ABSTRACT
Several standard references exist on classification and mapping of soils and land, so the notes which follow are intended only to highlight a number of important points. Full references are given to the standard works, and systems used by BAI are treated in detail, but no attempt has been made to repeat or summarise all the literature. Soil morphological properties are discussed in detail by USDA (1951) and FAO (1977a); some of these properties and their quantitative limits are summarised in Annex H, whilst specific earth science terms (including geology, mineralogy, geomorphology and soils) are given in Annexes L and N. A recent review of soil classification appears in Butler (1980) and a historical perspective is provided by Finkl (1982).
