ABSTRACT
Soil physical measurements are of very great importance for project planning and design, not least because they form the basis for many of the more costly operations that are required in project development. This chapter describes the main tests that are routinely carried out, and the interpretation of results for project implementation. Details of practical procedures are given in Annex B and descriptions of the basic theories in a number of soil physics textbooks (Baver et al, 1972; Childs, 1969; Hillel, 1971; James et al, 1982; Kirkham and Powers, 1972; Taylor and Ashcroft, 1972; Yong and Warkentin, 1975). Methodology is discussed in standard texts such as Black (1965, Volume 1), which also includes sections on observation errors, bias, operator variation and sampling.
