ABSTRACT

In this chapter, two recent extensions of the standard theory will be considered: Underspecification Theory (UT) and Lexical Phonology (see 5.2). The first is concerned with the theory of features and the specification of underlying segments. The second one involves a re-examination of the interface between phonology, morphology and syntax. The discussion of UT will be based on Archangeli’s major work on the subject ‘Underspecification in Yawelmani phonology and morphology’ (1984), an unpublished MIT thesis which has already had a great deal of influence on the technical literature. The presentation here will be uncritical but the topic will be taken up again in later chapters of the book (cf in particular Ch. 8).
