ABSTRACT
Late in the evening of 13 September 2007, the BBC’s Economic Editor, Robert Peston, broke the news that a major British mortgage bank, Northern Rock, was in serious financial trouble and had approached the Bank of England for emergency funding. Early the next morning, account-holders formed long queues outside Northern Rock branches to withdraw their money, triggering the first run on a British bank since 1866.
