ABSTRACT

This final chapter considers in detail two examples of research projects. The examples are hypothetical but draw upon the authors' experience of supervising numerous student projects. Our aim is to use the example projects to weave together many of the issues raised in earlier chapters. One of our reasons for doing this is to emphasise the point that topics such as sampling, interviewing and data analysis should not be viewed in isolation from each other; all take place within a broader research process which is thus perhaps best illustrated holistically. We also recognise that it is not always easy for students to relate discussions of methodological and technical issues to research practice; our examples, therefore, are of the kind of research project that undergraduates might carry out as the basis for final-year dissertations (which are often of about 5000 to 10 000 words in length); however, much of what follows is also of relevance to Master's degree dissertations, and to shorter undergraduate projects.
