ABSTRACT

The broad categories of floor structures have been discussed in Part 1, chapter 8. An indication of the economic application of these relative to span and superimposed loading is given in table 8.1 of that volume and the types of floor construction suitable for short spans and for longer spans with light loading are described. In this chapter those types of floor appropriate to wide span and heavily loaded buildings will be considered, together with some special types of construction. As pointed out in Part 1, in large-scale and multi-storey buildings the floors are normally main structural elements closely related to the general structure of the building and as such they must be considered at the design stage.
