ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, attention focused on the concept of a vision, and some of the processes that can be used to identify a desirable future. In resource and environmental management, many people have included sustainable development, or, more recently, sustainability, as the core or centrepiece for a desirable future state. In this chapter, attention is first given to the emergence of sustainable development (Section 4.2), along with principles and perspectives about the concept. Section 4.3 considers the implications for the concept in developed and developing countries. In Section 4.4, the future search conference process is examined relative to exploring the future, and in Section 4.5 its application to develop a National Conservation Strategy for Pakistan is examined.
