ABSTRACT

As outlined in Chapter 2, complexity and uncertainty present challenges for resource and environmental analysts, planners and decision makers. In this chapter, two inter-related responses to deal with change, complexity and uncertainty are examined: learning organizations and adaptive environmental management. In Section 6.2, the characteristics of learning organizations are outlined. Then, in Section 6.3, basic ideas associated with adaptive environmental management are considered, and Section 6.4 provides an example of the application of adaptive environmental management. A final section highlights the main conclusions about adaptive environmental management, as well as the implications of this concept.
