First publ. DP, 28 May 1864; repr. DP2, 1868, 1880, 1888. The MS, part of the printer’s copy for DP, is at Morgan. It is a clean copy, with few cancellations or verbal variants from 1864. Revision in subsequent editions was confined to a single verbal change in 1888 (l. 64) and a handful of punctuation variants.
