In addition to the previous translations which D. consulted throughout his work on Juvenal, for this satire he also used John Oldham’s ‘A Satyr, In Imitation of the Third of Juvenal’ in his Poems, and Translations (1683), and Boileau’s Satire I (1666). Both were free imitations rather than close translations: Oldham had transposed the scene to contemporary London, and Boileau to Paris.
