ABSTRACT
First publ. M & W, 10 Nov. 1855; repr. 1863 (when it was placed in ‘Men, and Women’, the opening poem in this section: see Appendix D, p. 747), 1868, 1888. Our text is 1855. The poem was included in proof in 18652 but was left out of the published volume, for reasons not known; it does not appear in the other volumes of selections (1872, 1880) published in B.’s lifetime, a distinction it shares with only two other poems from M & W, The Twins and Another Way of Love. There are only three punctuation variants in H proof, none of them rec. in H proof 2 .
