The student-mentor relationship invariably draws on emotion. Mentors want their students to be successful and may feel personally responsible if they fail. Students often see their mentors as a ‘nurturing’ or ‘parental’ figure, which may put additional pressure on the mentor. While it is important to recognise the personal aspects of the relationship as a mentor you must remember that you have multiple roles, which can be conflicting particularly if summative assessment is part of your mentoring role (Wilkes 2006).
