ABSTRACT

Lily arrived at school one day excited to talk about a news report she had seen on television the night before. The report was about the beluga in the St. Lawrence River in southeastern Canada, and the pollution that was endangering their lives. The pollution was caused by chemical waste dumped into the water by a manufacturing company on the shore of the river. Lily learned that the beluga in the St. Lawrence were absorbing toxic chemical waste into their bodies and that as a result, they were in danger of becoming extinct from that area. In this chapter, I describe the learning and social action that unfolded as my students and I used this media text to reread a picture book.
