ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents a resource for policy makers, legislators, power system operators, and researchers who are interested in the issues arising from integration of large-scale renewable generation in the United States. It is the result of research performed during the 4-year RenewElec project by a team of technical and policy experts at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Vermont, Vermont Law School, and the Washington environmental law firm of Van Ness Feldman. Firstly, the book examines the nontechnical discussion of the technical and policy options for integration at large scale of variable electric power generation. Secondly, it presents some of the scientific findings of the project. Finally the book explores the critical review of major quantitative regional and national wind integration studies in the United States.
