ABSTRACT

President George W. Bush responded to the September 11 attacks by likening America's war on terror to a "crusade". The remark was branded an unfortunate slip-up and the media was blamed for distorting it. But Franklin Graham—son of Billy Graham, America's most famous evangelist, who gave the prayer at W's inaugural—told NBC News after September 11: "It wasn't Methodists flying into those buildings, and it wasn't Lutherans. It was an attack on this country by people of the Islamic faith". For Graham, Islam is a "very wicked and evil" religion. After the US victory in Iraq, he was invited by the Pentagon to deliver its Good Friday service.
