ABSTRACT

Henry Molaison as the patient was referred to, was destined to become one of the most famous neurological cases in the world. The mentally ill were often treated in barbaric ways with little or no understanding of their humanity. They were often confined with physical restraints for weeks on end. Doctors were developing more and more therapies that now seem little more than innovative forms of torture. Brenda Milner, one of the world's leading memory researchers, visited Henry and started a systematic investigation. One of Henry's gifts to science was the discovery that there are many different forms of memory and that they are located in different areas of the brain. He managed to learn a number of procedural memories. He showed normal learning ability for the task but on subsequent occasions when he was asked to perform the task he was totally unaware that he had learned the particular skill.
