ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the man who was disappointed with what SB saw. His particular eyesight problem was declared inoperable. He became blind at the age of 10 months due to an infection following a smallpox vaccination. The ophthalmic surgeon, Mr. Hirtenstein tested SB and suggested that since he was not actually blind, that there might be an operation that could improve his corneal functioning and thus restore his sight. Gregory and Wallace asked SB to complete a number of different perceptual tests. Nevertheless, by the time Gregory and Wallace met SB. they were armed with an array of various tests of his visual abilities. SB was not so certain about colour recognition. Soon after his operation, SB was invited to London to see the sights. SB'.s first visual experience after the operation was the sight of the surgeon's face as his bandages were removed. SB seemed disinterested in seeing the sights and generally disappointed in life itself.
