ABSTRACT

This is an American English accent model that Dudley Knight synthesized to teach a model of American English that employs the details of phonemes without regional variation. He referred to this model in his article on Standard Speech in The Vocal Vision and changed the name of this model to Formal Speechin his book Speaking with Skill, this workbook will use the older term DAE when referring to the model. The model is a linguistic work-out for American English and provides a clear frame of reference for accent work. DAE is the base accent used in exploring the sound changes for the African accents in this workbook. As one begin to investigate the sound shifts in the tables, his/her will notice diacritics for the sounds. Also, keep listening to one's accent samplesas their work with the tables. This is where one will hear invaluable primary sources illustrate the sound shifts.
