ABSTRACT

Several times a year, subscribers have the opportunity to rejoin as a community. One of the main events is the annual memorial which brings together between two and three hundred subscribers and guests. As well as honouring the departed through an hour-long ritual, participants celebrate the community of Tree-Burial through festive animations and communal singing. In addition, the office organizes seasonal workshops three times a year. During a period of four days, between thirty and forty participants assist in the maintenance of forests, hike local mountains, practise Zen meditation, attend informal lectures about Buddhism and ecology, attend local cultural events, and share lodgings and meals throughout their retreat-like experience within nature. In addition to these official gatherings, my research reveals that those subscribers who have become closely acquainted choose to organize more private sojourns in the lodgings provided by the temple. Both official and private gatherings are shared through a website, a newsletter and other publications. These collective activities allow for the creation of bonds between subscribers around the object of nature.
