ABSTRACT

This chapter concentrates on some of the skills associated with reading, in particular reading in the context of study. Reading is perhaps the most important aspect of learning – it not only provides information and argument but also gives structure to your imagination and influences your own style of writing. However, many students find this aspect of study difficult, sometimes because they are not used to reading ‘academic’ texts or because they have struggled with reading in the past. However‘not reading’ is never an option when approaching study! Adopting new ways of reading is a skill that requires consideration and practice in order to get the most out of academic texts.
