ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains how violent political movements (VPMs) transform during and after a conflict into new types of organizations using the collective political violence transformative (CPVT) model. The collective political violence transformative model, defines the processes that interact to influence the transformation of violent political movements. This study delves into the manner in which violent political movements transform during conflict and, in some cases, continue to transform in the post-conflict environment. During their development, the VPMs may move from organizations that are primarily in a state of militancy to organizations that blend militancy and political approaches. The book has implications for two major areas- public policy making and advancement of the study of contentious politics, political violence, and social movements. It would further scholarship by focusing on the transformation of guerrilla movements during and after conflict.
