ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses some of the key ideas, specific steps, and common processes for the production and publication of comics. Traditionally, comics have been published as comic books, as strips appearing in magazines and newspapers, and more recently as graphic novels. There have been other forms of published comics, especially non-fiction comics such as didactic pamphlets, that taught soldiers in World War II how to avoid venereal disease. Contemporary publishing also includes online comics, interactive comics, and even animated comics in video media formats. Each of these forms of publication presents unique technical challenges that must be mastered to bring nonfiction comics to an intended audience. To understand the publication criteria for finished comic, people must start with production research. For self-publishing the comics, people need to study common formats and practices for publication method-printing, web-based e-reader. Technology continues to make the production of comics more accessible to a wide variety of audiences.
