ABSTRACT

This chapter links language, culture, plasticity and experience. We illustrate how our current understanding of what counts as language is undergoing massive transformation. Connecting closely with Chapter 4: ‘The making of culture’, we understand language as a fluid, dynamic, shared and relational process in which everyone does not participate in the same way. In our analysis of the relationship between language, culture, learning and the brain, we explore how our practices rather than our brains are affected by changes in participation and reification.
