ABSTRACT

The previous chapter discussed how insights from international and crosscultural management (ICCM) might further enrich our current understanding of management in development non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and how it might contribute to increasing the fit of management tools and techniques utilized with the local context in which they are deployed. Due to the very nature of the context in which they operate, NGOs are confronted with cultural differences. These include cross-cultural encounters between international staff and local staff as well as differences linked to the ethnic diversity prevalent in many African countries. If the “managing for development results” strategy and increased aid effectiveness are to be achieved, these cultural differences need to be acknowledged, valorized and incorporated into the day-to-day management of NGOs.
