ABSTRACT

The previous chapter was aimed at answering the how question and providing a description of the on-going practices in the organizations participating in this research. As the previous chapter showed, these practices chiefly clustered around post-instrumental and African Renaissance management systems. In this chapter, I want to uncover what lies beneath the surface. In order to do so, I temporarily bracket out the material practices. Thus, while the previous chapter bracketed out the discursive resources and focussed on the discursive and material practices and outlined how things are organized and managed in the organizations participating in this study, this chapter aims to highlight what informs those practices. This chapter will, therefore, be more analytical in its objectives as it aims to bring an analysis of the discursive resources participants draw upon when rationalizing and constructing the notion of non-governmental organizations (NGO) management.
