ABSTRACT

As we have noted more than once in this book, few of these topics are new. Most of the proposed changes have been tried from time to time in some form. The current restructuring efforts which call for alternative ways to group students fit that description. They often overlap such efforts as school choice, cooperative learning, and integrated curriculum. We have chosen to examine various proposed changes separately in order to display their merits and faults in sharper relief. The focus in this chapter is on alternatives to traditional graded instruction and grouping in elementary and secondary schools.
