ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the needs of 14- to 16-year-olds. Erikson (1950) characterises adolescence as the stage when young people develop either a strong sense of self, a feeling of independence and control, or remain unsure about themselves and the future. The tension between individual and collective identity is also apparent. At school, it feels important to fit in and be part of the crowd, but students also want to explore who they are and who they could possibly become.
