ABSTRACT

The Youth On Religion (YOR) study contributes to an interdisciplinary understanding of the processes involved as young people in multi-faith areas make sense of their lives. Influenced by the classic theorists, it utilises a largely interpretive social science approach to examine how they develop and negotiate their religious identities through their interactions with both those around them and the institutional structures that overshadow them (Denzin, 2009). Data to enable the exploration of these questions were collected through schools and colleges in three British multi-faith locations by means of an online survey, discussion groups, paired interviews and e-Journals. In total, around 10,500 young people mainly between 13 and 18 years participated in the survey, 157 17 and 18-year-olds took part in the groups and interviews, and 36 of these 157 contributed to e-Journals. The quantitative and qualitative findings, their interpretations and implications, are brought together in this book.
