ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the story of Islam and explain the religion's core teachings while drawing out the implications the worldview may have on an understanding of leadership. In the Islamic leadership model, leaders pursue a vision of creating a society that is just, welfare-oriented, egalitarian, and free from discrimination, exploitation, and oppression. The purpose of Islamic leadership, as Mir notes here, underscores the significance of the social teachings of Islam. The Islamic notion of a leader's responsibility goes far beyond the immediate task at hand and extends to the purpose of creating a just society based on the teachings of Islam. The epic film The Message directed by Moustapha Akkad and starring Anthony Quinn as Mohammad's uncle, Hamza, tells the story of the birth of Islam and highlights the religion's key teachings. In the West, religion is considered primarily regulated to the private sphere, but religion helps to understand the ideal form of Islamic leadership.
