ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the third component the common goal. In order to understand the dynamic of goal setting and the work that is to be done to achieve it, the people also need to understand the events and forces that influence the leader-follower relationship. It focuses on the big G, institutional goals that compel leaders and followers to work together and mobilize resources toward achieving their goal. The chapter has shown the importance of leaders and followers understanding the leadership moment they are facing-the historical forces that are shaping goal setting and goal implementation. It also shows that a common goal can be powerful. This notion of power takes us beyond the perspective that leaders are the ones associated with the ability to compel others to follow. In Delacroix's painting, the followers are focused on the common goal, while the leaders lie on the floor, naked and defeated.
