ABSTRACT

The existing state system regulated by international law has evolved slowly over several centuries. The birth of the international politico-legal system is often dated back to the Peace of Westphalia of 1648 which ended the Thirty Years’ War and initiated the development of the state-based system in Europe. The goal of this state-based international political system has been to maintain peace among independent states. The idea that the international community could pursue shared law and politics in order to address worldwide problems together is a comparatively modern one: the foundation of the United Nations in 1945 made the development of international political and legal cooperation possible.
