ABSTRACT

This chapter explores students’ ideas of the ideal society they would like to live in. The data of this chapter were collected through hypothetical questions asked to students during interviews and focus group discussion (FGDs)s. A hypothetical question presents queries in the form of theoretical suppositions and is predominantly used in political polling and market research to understand a community’s aspirations and expectations of certain issues given suppositional conditions (Moore, Neal, Fitzsimons, & Shiv, 2012). This type of question may influence individuals’ behaviours as indicated by Moore et al.’s (2012) study. One of the reasons for this influence is derived by respondents from the knowledge provided by the hypothetical questions. In the case of this study, I should acknowledge that the questions might have potentially influenced the students’ answers. However, considering the diverse responses of students to the questions and the open discussions in which students expressed obvious freedom in contributing to the discussions, I have no doubt that the influence has been kept minimal.
