ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes that reduced constructions are mono-clausal at all strata. In particular, it proposes that reduction triggers subcategorize for a VP complement. One of the goals of this chapter is to argue against proposals that posit bi-clausal representations. In some cases it will turn out that such bi-clausal representations do little to account for bi-clausal characteristics. The chapter argues that the bi-clausal representations are undermotivated, and additionally, make it too difficult to account for the mono-clausal characteristics. It establishes the plausibility of a VP complement account of reduced constructions. The chapter argues that there is no need for a bi-clausal representation at any stratum. It establishes that there is no evidence that forces us to conclude that verb movement has created a verb adjunction structure from an underlying VP-complement structure; in fact, the coordination data seems to argue against such verb-adjunction.
