ABSTRACT

This chapter shall deals with several theoretical and descriptive issues concerning the rule of Extraposition. The chapter argues that a syntactic analysis which relates the a and b versions in pairs like those in by a movement rule is preferable to a no-rule analysis of the sort proposed by Koster (1978), for instance i.e an analysis where the CCs are base generated in their surface positions in both versions. It argues for an Extraposition analysis as opposed to an 'Intraposition' analysis of the type suggested by Emonds (1970, 1972). It concludes the argument that shows up in subject position in the b-versions is sometimes base generated in that position and sometimes inserted as a place filling dummy. In this respect our analysis will differ from most Extraposition analyses proposed in the literature, since these have generally either assumed that the Extraposition it is base generated in all cases or transformationally inserted in all cases.
