ABSTRACT

Local school districts faced with teacher vacancies are competing with other districts and states for a shrinking pool of teacher candidates. Pre-service teachers interviewing for jobs tell us that many school districts are offering sizeable bonuses, help with real estate costs, and higher starting salaries. In addition, there has been significant growth in providing “nontraditional” potential teachers with opportunities to pursue licensure and teaching careers. The challenge is to maintain quality at a time when quantity is such a strong need.
