ABSTRACT

Some educators who do not understand special education hold damaging stereotypes about students with disabilities: “They are all slow learners and troubled kids.” This stereotype interferes with students with disabilities being able to accomplish standards-based learning, because it obscures significant differences. This chapter provides the essential knowledge about students with disabilities, so that their teachers can help them accomplish standards-based learning. Twelve categories of students with disabilities are identified, with the four most common types explained in full.
